Bay 6 Recordings specialise in drum & bass’ soulful strand, and this month they present “Nothing Is Real EP”, the latest release by West London’s Qumulus. Making his name as a multi-genre DJ over the past fifteen years, Qumulus has racked up releases on various labels such as Four Corners Music, Celsius and more.

Inspired by the works of German-born teacher and author Eckhart Tolle, “Nothing Is Real / Who We Are Not As Others” reflects the idea that nothing we acknowledge in life is what we perceive it to be. Written “with a very stoic frame of mind”, the tracks are considered in sound and could find a home both as immersive headphone listening or as peak-time club music.

The title track ‘Nothing Is Real’ opens the EP. The introduction is a blend of fizzing melodies, hyperspeed percussion work and rising vocal samples. After the drop, the track unfurls into a sonic palette of intricate moving parts. Vibrant and elegant in equal measure, Qumulus’ production ability means that ‘Nothing Is Real’ captures the mind with each bass, synth and drum note.

‘We Who Are Not As Others’ carries the same vigour as its predecessor while injecting a dose of sound system energy. That’s down to the vast open space of the track, which Qumulus’ populates with crisp bass motifs and melodic vocal samples. Each part of ‘Who We Are Not As Others’ glides through the speakers, primed to give its listeners mind expansion as well as an invitation to dance.
